How to Use Cannabis Concentrates: The Gear and the Basics

Concentrates are the most potent products on a dispensary menu — wax, shatter, live resin, rosin, badder, sugar, sauce, and diamonds are all cannabis stripped down to its cannabinoids and terpenes. A little goes a long way, and the experience leans on having the right gear and using it well. Here’s what to know about the accessories worth considering and how concentrates are actually used.

What counts as a concentrate

Concentrates are extracts — the resin from cannabis flower concentrated into a much more potent form, often 60–90% THC compared with roughly 15–30% for flower. Textures and names vary (shatter is glassy, badder and budder are whipped, live resin and rosin hold onto more terpenes, and diamonds are near-pure THCa), but they’re consumed in similar ways. You’ll find them on the live menu alongside flower, vapes, and edibles.

Ways to use concentrates

There are a few common methods, from a full setup to grab-and-go options:

• Dab rig: a water pipe made for concentrates. You heat a “banger” (a quartz bucket), add a small dab, and inhale — the classic, most flavorful method.
• Electronic rig or dab pen: battery-powered devices that heat the concentrate at the push of a button — no torch, easier to dose, and travel-friendly.
• Topping flower: add a little concentrate to a packed bowl or roll it into a joint (“twaxing”) to boost potency with no extra gear.

Vape cartridges are technically concentrate too, but they’re all-in-one and need no accessories, so we’ll focus on loose concentrates here.

Accessories worth considering

If you’re going the dab-rig route, a few pieces make the experience better, safer, and more flavorful:

• Dab rig: a small water pipe designed for concentrates.
• Quartz banger: the bucket that holds and heats the dab — quartz gives the cleanest flavor.
• Torch or e-nail: a butane torch heats the banger, or an electronic nail holds a set temperature for you.
• Carb cap: covers the banger to trap heat and direct airflow so you vaporize every bit at a lower temperature.
• Dab tool (dabber): a small metal or glass wand for handling sticky concentrate.
• Terp pearls (optional): little beads that spin inside the banger to spread the concentrate for a more even, flavorful dab.

How to take a dab, step by step

1. Start small. Scoop a tiny amount — about the size of a grain of rice — onto your dab tool. Concentrates are strong; you can always add more.
2. Heat the banger. Aim the torch at the bottom until it’s lightly glowing, then turn it off.
3. Let it cool. Wait 30–60 seconds. A cooler banger (around 500°F) gives smoother, tastier vapor than a red-hot one.
4. Apply and inhale. Touch the concentrate to the inside of the banger and breathe in slowly and steadily.
5. Cap it. Set the carb cap on top and rotate it to keep the concentrate moving and fully vaporizing.
6. Exhale and pause. Give it a few minutes before deciding whether you want more.

With an electronic rig or dab pen it’s simpler still: load a small amount, choose your temperature, let it heat, and inhale.

A few tips to keep it easy

• Go low and slow. One small dab is often plenty — especially if you’re used to flower.
• Lower temps taste better. High heat scorches terpenes and gets harsh; cooler dabs are smoother and more flavorful.
• Keep it clean. Swab the banger while it’s still warm so residue doesn’t build up.
• Store it cool and dark. Heat and light degrade concentrates — an airtight container in a cool spot keeps them fresh.
• Mind the basics. Concentrates are for adults 21+, and as with any cannabis, don’t drive after using.
